Keynote address

Everyday Clutch

Wednesday 10 April 2024 -3.35pm-4.35pm

Think of the greatest athletes in sport, or the greatest team performances over time, and you'll likely think of a time when they were able toperform when the stakes were at their highest, or as they are referred to in sporting parlance as, "The Clutch". These are the moments when theresult is on the line, and the pressure is high. In these moments, some teams who have performed well all season suddenly appear like strangersto each other. Coaches and fans alike are left thinking, "What just happened? How did that happen?" In these moments, some athletes, impactedby pressure, look to their team-mates to rescue the situation. But what separates the best athletes and teams from the rest, is their ability to stepup in these 'Clutch Moments', take ownership of the play and do what's required to change the outcome of the game.

Often the media portrays these teams or individuals as being those who can rise to the occasion. In reality, it's rare that anyone raises their gameunder pressure, rather they fall back on their training.

As school leaders, you're faced with your own Clutch Moments everyday, whether that's sharing a new direction with staff (perhaps buoyed bythe ideas and inspiration from this year's AHISA conference!), or managing a tricky parent or staff issue. School leaders often find themselves insituations where the pressure is high and the outcome unknown.

In this keynote, Dan Haesler will share frameworks and tools he uses with elite athletes and teams to help them prepare, perform and recoverday-to-day so that they are able to fall back on their training in the moments that matter, and you'll be encouraged to explore how you might beable to use similar strategies in your day-to-day life.
